Envy, a potentially destructive painful feeling which gnaws away at the joy of living, develops at the heart of object relations, whose history and quality must be taken into consideration. Drawing on a case of psychodrama, the author looks at the effects of the mother’s envy on the child’s mind. The hypothesis is put forward of the incorporation of an envious maternal object, setting up a relation of mastery within the subject. Thanks to the depiction of the different internal and external objects that role-playing permits, as well as the diversity of their relations, psychodrama is the analytic site of choice for dealing with these forms of internal colonization. With this patient, the revelation of a prohibition on living transmitted through the maternal filiation gave rise to the actualization through role-playing of an “envy of himself”, which was interpreted as the expression of the internal mastery of the incorporated envious mother.
