Penis envy is presented as a narcissistic refusal of our incompleteness. In designating the penis as its object, envy shows that it is an effect of an internal difference transposed on to the difference between the sexes, from which it is important to protect oneself. This endogenous traumatic factor is frequently designated by the term truth and metaphorized by the penis, but also by the sun or one of the gods in myths. Envy reveals two truths of the mind. It represents the specific characteristic of Eros, the life drive, its tendency to infinite extension implied in all transferences and ambitions to develop, and is expressed by the wish to be possess an unlimited and inexhaustible source of libidinal energy. Envy also reminds us of our amazement at the capacity of the mind to carry out the work required by the extinctive tendencies and thereby to support and register living systems.
