When external reality breaks into the setting, what means does the analyst have to face the situation: suspend the treatment or reconsider the setting to preserve it from the deadly barrage and ward off the aggressions of external reality? Covid-19, like war, or analysands with narcissistic fragilities and pervasive destructiveness, have the particularity of leading the analyst to look at the frame and reflect on the transference/countertransference modalities that are mobilized. The analyst thus has the possibility, if not the duty, to reconsider the setting in order to offer patients a tailor-made support that permits the activation of the function of representation. The challenge is not to lose sight of the frame, while listening to one’s intuitiveness and creativity. Is not psychoanalysis above all an art, to use Winnicott’s words?
