Based on H. Arendt’s analysis of totalitarianism, the author looks at the function of groups and institutions as psychic spaces as well as their function of protecting narcissism. In certain traumatic situations, a primal counter-fantasy appears, the zoo fantasy, whose function is to neutralize drive activity and to respond to a state of helplessness. Finally, there is the question of possible analogies between the analytical treatment and its extreme situations.
