In the treatment of a patient with severe and debilitating psychotic symptoms, body psychoanalytic psychotherapy eases the difficulty of establishing a therapeutic relationship. The patient, whose delusional body manifested a degree of excitation that could not be channelled by a defective stimulus barrier, was unable to elaborate her thoughts. She gradually gained access to her memories by evoking her bodily feelings. The consideration by her therapist of the delusional account of her bodily sensations helped to enrich the discourse of the patient, who was locked into a poorly elaborated state of grievance. Dreams appeared between sessions after several years of therapy. By sharing this particular bodily experience, representations and the evocation of traumatic memories became possible for her, producing moments of relief allowing Josephine to take an interest in her psychic functioning despite her persistent psychotic symptoms.
