Freud’s pessimism concerning the fate of splitting continues to raise questions about working arrangements and the therapeutic approach concerning its effects; and therefore about the treatment of patients for whom splitting is a privileged mechanism of defence, that is to say, borderline-narcissistic patients. The multiple splitting identified by Freud’s successors constituted a real enrichment on this point, in particular because their relations with the primary trauma led us along the paths of the economic dimension and thereby along those of the links between body and psyche, furnishing a better understanding of the remains and return of the split-off elements. And yet, have these advances resulted in more optimism? This is what I propose to discuss in this article, with reference to the treatment of the somato-psychic remainders of splitting, which, in particular, involves being receptive in the transference to the energetic deregulations arising from this same splitting. It is a matter of fostering a reinforcement of the “basic identity tonus” guaranteeing the maintenance of life in oneself and the sense of continuity of personal existence.
