Hopefulness or hope? Hope is like a spark, which can quickly go out, whereas hopefulness is a tension of desiring, which includes the time of the future. We can thus explore Freud’s work with a view to identifying what in, phantasies or dreams, makes it possible to hope to fulfil desire, by accommodating it with external reality. Or we can seek to understand how object-presentations can gradually contain the discharge of excitation, then of the drive, depending on their topographical level. The ideal agencies, the superego and the ego-ideal, are also involved as the legacy of the Oedipus complex in order to contain the narcissism of the primitive ideal ego. The aims of psychoanalysis are a source of hope for our patients when they can accept the period of time that is necessary for an evolution that cannot be magical, but is sustained by the transference, in order to fight against negative visions of love (Eros, to follow Freud) in our society tempted by decline, the end of love and simplifying or terrorist ideology.
