In 1922, Freud introduced an essay prize on the relations between psychoanalytic technique and theory, but received no direct responses. After the closing date, Rank and Ferenczi published The Development of Psychoanalysis, which gave rise to a lively controversy that was to have major repercussions on the history of the analytic movement. In Thérapie contre théorie ? Les enjeux d’un concours (Puf, ), Mady Jeannet-Hasler made an in-depth study of this little-known episode in the history of the pioneers of psychoanalysis, a mix of scientific, political and passionate issues. Like Rank and Ferenczi, she deplores the fact that scientific investigation prevailed over therapeutic commitment and shows that, in her view, some of their ideas (reliving and emotional remembering, the transference and the analytic situation) that were rejected at the time prefigured the evolution of contemporary psychoanalysis.
