The superego of 1923 is the precipitate of recognition of the otherness of the other. The condition for this is to have been recognized oneself as other, with one’s own needs, one’s self love and one’s own hatred. The recognition of the otherness of the other presupposes prior separations and this history is accompanied by a subjective appropriation of the drive. If bindings in the form of ideational contents do not succeed, all that remains is the sadomasochistic relationship between the superego and the ego, which must absorb the traumatic excitation. And the superego is transmitted from one generation to another.
