In the session, as in childhood, a quest for identification with the mind of an other is combined with a call to identify with a model of ideal functioning. The establishment of psychic processes is based on an anticipatory activity that underlines the failure to be ideal and requires a work of appropriation. This identification occurs under the aegis of an imperative to make things exist which is opposed to the extinctive drive tendencies. The object of objectality is born of such a renunciation of extinction. It is defined by its singularities and by the fact that there remains another support for lack. The ternary constellation, drive-object-superego, can be the object of an evasion in favour of regressive binary theories, drive-object, putting the object in place of the agency of the superego.
