Why did Freud never appreciate cinema? It was thanks to several patients, but two of them in particular who were film-makers, each aware, throughout the analysis, of the bisexual issues at stake in their art and of their capacity to engage in mourning, that the author was led to invent the notion of Ego Alter, which, in her eyes, precedes any form of sublimation and has a part to play in projection. It could be said that it links the work to the artist and the analysand to his psychoanalyst when they accept experiences of depersonalisation and the transport of forces of unbinding in the ego, which is enriched accordingly. In a quaternary balancing act involving fear, “rape”, despair and authenticity, the author employs this notion in several films supported by the written statements of more than one director. This meditation on cinema is the sequel to a book: En deçà de la sublimation. L’Ego alter , in which she critically analysed this notion, through literature and painting.
