Affects, theories, ideational contents and sensual experiences emerge according to the process of après-coup. The initial transposition of unconscious elements onto tangible materials – the body, psychic contents, language, objects of sensory perception – is followed by a renunciation of these metaphors in favour of the conceptualization of mental life. Interpretation of the function of psychic productions makes it possible to become aware of extinctive tendencies. The result is an epistemology of psychoanalysis.
