The author describes the aims of the work of distortion in dreams and in the session. She emphasizes how images and affects are subjected to this work which allows infantile wishes to remain in the unconscious. She envisages an anti-traumatic function for distortion. When this dynamic fails, traumatic configurations emerge. The resumption of distortion facilitates the work of mourning and the transition from a monotone affect to a plurality of affects.
