Starting with a disturbing dream distortion – an owl's ball – the author shows how distortion operates at the most diverse levels. Following Freud, we must consider distortion in dreams as an irrefutable fact (Die Tatsache der Traumentstellung). The etymological study of the German word Entstellung leads to a dynamic dimension of the search for the object. Based on psychotic clinical material, the work with fragmentary distortions is presented. A regressive movement on the part of the analyst is then essential.
