“Identifying” refers to what each and every one of us, from day one, can find in the other, and expect from the other, to constitute ourselves in our singularity as thinking, desiring, acting subjects. For better or for worse. Psychoanalysis is interested in the nature of these “borrowings”, particularly in their unconscious components and the diversity of their psychic registrations. “Plurality of psychic persons” is a phrase that Freud first used in 1896. The complexity and subtlety of the processes of identification and their multiple forms of expression, as identified by Freud in different contexts (hysteria, dreams, melancholia, construction of the agencies, social ties, comedy, mourning, etc.), contrast with the contemporary promotion of discourses of certainty based on blind confidence in the manifest aspects of reductive assertions of identity that are supposed to testify alone to the truth of “who I am”. Our egos are composite figures, made up of the traces left by our past and present passions, all of which are attempts to come to terms with what otherness imposes on us over the course of time : difference, loss, the unknown, renunciation and assignments. The illusion of being able to “be the other”. It is the different psychic mechanisms to which these attempts to come to terms with otherness correspond (repression, denial, foreclosure) that determine their psychic destiny.
