Melancholic identification can be too costly a solution, a source of intolerable suffering. To protect themselves, some people develop a “centrifugal” solution, expelling the object and then destroying it rather than keeping it in the ego. By reversing the passive experience of loss into the active, it is the subject who makes the object disappear, including in the transference. It is then a matter of decathecting the object and de-objectalising the world, an expression of the death drive as described by André Green, as the ultimate way of avoiding suffering. In these cases, transference through reversal also becomes a way of making the analyst experience disappearance.
