The author examines the status of being in psychoanalysis. How can we conceive of a sense of self when the ego is only gradually constituted, and presupposes separating from the first objects ? The role of multiple identifications is highlighted here. The term being indicates a movement, not a static and definitive state, which gradually builds its history, including its past.
