The author looks at the role of adhesiveness in identification permitting the formation of character, while emphasising the drive defusion implied by the change of goal that transforms object libido into narcissistic libido. In character neurosis, the mortification of the character armour that rejects what comes from the other, the two-dimensionality that prohibits introjection and hardness all evoke the autistic register. The degree of defusion allows for intermediate forms.
