Borrowing from the object is to be considered first of all as an incorporation which creates a cannibalistic link in phantasy. It is a question of identifying the origin of this or that borrowing or identification in the treatment. The work of elaboration in analysis consists in lifting repressions and reducing splits to some extent. As a result, the ego is reunited and strengthened. It can then gain access to the synthetic function and judgement. The conscious ego can then decide to separate itself from a particular identification or borrowing.
