Drawing on a clinical case, this article looks at an effect of setting up an analysis after a fairly long face-to-face situation, making the change of setting an act caught in the transference. In this case, the request gave rise to a moment of uncanniness for the patient, the meaning of which is linked to his impending paternity, the reality of setting up an analysis and the reactivation of an Oedipal and murderous fantasy. The uncanniness seems to be a manifestation of uncertainty about the boundaries between reality and fantasy, inside and outside, analyst and patient. This uncanny moment seems above all to be linked to a modality of an exciting double transference in which the masochism and sadism of both patient and analyst are strongly brought into play. It is through the analyst’s associations and a moment of disturbance in the analysis that masochism and sadism unfold and take on meaning in the treatment.
