The Mediterranean Group’s exchanges with Tunisia date back to 1990, well before the recognition by the IPA in 2012 of the Tunisian Association for the Development of Psychoanalysis (ATDP) as an “Allied Centre”. Exchanges with our colleagues taught us a lot about what is familiar and foreign. Our sensoriality is stimulated by the scents and sounds so specific to Tunisia. Religion is present and the family is seen differently in France and Tunisia. The work of our colleagues was sometimes reminiscent of Freud in his early days, sometimes working without a protective setting. Talking about the work of our Tunisian colleagues made us think a lot about the use of our internal setting and the possible adjustments to the external setting. We wondered what associative paths Freudian texts in French translations might take for an Arabic-speaking reader.
