Freud's discovery was that dreams are the expression of unconscious wishes. But apart from dreams that use symbols, long and fairly straightforward dreams, the mechanisms of censorship are used to conceal these wishes by means of displacement and condensation, turning them into their opposite, repetition or cuts. This brings to mind the defence mechanisms of neurosis and the primal fantasies of the Oedipal situation. But if dreams do not contain emotions or excitation, we have nightmares or dreams akin to sleepwalking. In actual neuroses and psychosomatic disorders, these disturbances of the oneiric function require technical adjustments such as the face-to-face situation or relaxation in order to reconstruct dreams containing wishes, instead of a repetitive discharge.
