The Anna Freud-Melanie Klein Controversies can be read as a quarrel over the inheritance of Freud's work. The diversity of the theoretical proposals contained in the work creates a conflict between the heirs over the ways in which the founding texts are read, interpreted and used, a conflict that each psychoanalyst in turn inherits from his or her singular position. Melanie Klein claimed to be the legitimate descendant in the dispute with Anna Freud and maintained that the opposition she encountered was due to the resistance of the analysts themselves. Donald W. Winnicott saw the transmission of the psychoanalytic method as the central and potentially consensual element of the legacy. As for Anna Freud, she followed her father's line of social thought by creating numerous institutions throughout her life. Given the history of the development of the Freudian corpus, the hypothesis that Freud was a heretic himself is put forward.
