Analytic work provokes a crisis which must become mutative. This transformational crisis brings into play considerable forces and the analyst must ensure that they are tolerable for the patient. These forces are then placed in the service of change. The author provides theoretical and clinical suggestions for thinking about and implementing a new admixture of the drives, the key to a viable psychic economy. Transforming unconscious self-destructive strategies presupposes that the patient is able to shift their position within the transference, and if this is not possible, it is up to the analyst to do so. The aim is to create a three-dimensional transference space open to the unknown, a variable psychic space that allows the patient to be dynamically contained during these displacements until the analysis is terminated successfully, with a new openness to the world.
