One hundred years after the publication of “The Economic Problem of Masochism”, the need for punishment and the unconscious feeling of guilt continue to fuel the suffering and complaints of those who feel overwhelmed by an unjust destiny, while ignoring the sexual dimension of the resulting moral masochism. At a time when psychoanalysis and its understanding of human sexuality are being challenged, it is important to return to the revolution brought about by Freud's second theory of drives and the precession of masochism from sadism. Underlined by Benno Rosenberg, the primary drive fusion of erogenous masochism gives rise to the ego and psychic temporality. André Green has emphasised the disobjectalising role of the death drive. It is useful to clarify the differences between their points of view. Moral masochism has the particularity of carrying out an incestuous oedipal regression. Over and above the complex issues involved in masochism listening, analysis must also challenge the denial of otherness that masochism permits.
