Hypochondria expresses anxiety through the affirmation of a bodily disorder. Its nosographic situation can vary between neurosis and psychosis, including concern about one's own health or that of a close relative. Hysterical conversion shows the somatic disorder without expressing it verbally, while hypochondria is addressed to another person who is often rendered powerless. Between these two poles, various somatic disorders can be cathected in a hysterical or hypochondriacal way, for example through chronic pain such as fibromyalgia. Other clinical manifestations (simulation, pathomimicry, dysmorphophobia, anorexia or trans-identity) may be grafted onto these problems. Their polymorphism raises the question of the place of refusal and loss in psychic life.
