This paper looks at the impossible memory of the trauma without memory, or how to move from a perceptual trace to an attempt to rediscover a memory trace until a memory emerges. To do this the author employs the notion of very singular effects of aprèscoup, as it concerns patients returning for treatment in adulthood who were treated as children by the same analyst, or who believe they were. These ‘revenants’ from childhood naturally raise questions for us about the reasons for this return. Is it a matter of treating the unelaborated traumatic portion of an initial treatment? Can the unrepresentable nature of the trauma be elaborated in the transition from repetition to remembering? The mobilization of a dynamic of “working as doubles” during the resumption of analytical work allows for the actualization of a ‘raw psychic material material’ in the transference and the ‘construction’ of a container awaiting representations so that the seeds of memory can emerge.
