This text illuminates how Winnicott's concept of trauma differs from the Classical Freudian theory. Focusing on the fear of breakdown and regression in the transference, a clinical case highlights a point in the analysis when, due to the analyst's affective response, the original breakdown forced its way into the après coup. Moving from the couch to the chair proved to be the necessary change of setting for the analytic pair to discuss from a third position the psychic events of the patient's birth story. This led to the patient's ability to move from psychic non-survival-of-the-object to psychic survival-of-the-object.
