This article looks at the symbolizing function of dreams in the face of trauma. Based on Freud's revision of the theory of dreams and the traumatolytic function of dreams advanced by Ferenczi, the author shows how the dream images make it possible to represent visually what is not registered psychically. With the help of a clinical vignette, she illustrates the capacity of dreams to process psychic pain that is split off from the mind. From this perspective dreams go beyond their function as guardians of sleep, becoming a locus of subjective transformation.
