The author reflects on the relationship between repetition compulsion, the fear of breakdown and symbolization. Based on a clinical sequence, the author also describes how the experience of anxiety in a transference reactivation enabled a patient to recover a memory and experience a buried traumatic event for the first time, providing her with a symbolizing psychic registration.
