To love, to be loved, and to love oneself through the love of another, the love-object, and perhaps a future marital object. Who is this object and how do we choose him or her? The author explores the decisive stages that constitute the different categories or components of the object-choice that can be identified throughout Freud's work. He also follows Freud's explorations of the relationship between object-choice and the sex of the object, object-choice and romantic behaviour. Freud began his investigation in 1905 with his Three Essays and continued it until 1933, when he addressed the issues of female sexuality and femininity. Three texts mark milestones in the evolution of his research: “Narcissism: an introduction” (1914), “The psychogenesis of a case of homosexuality in a woman” (1920), and “Fetishism” (1927). He thus invites us to discover a historicity and a genuine process of object-choice that can be understood as a compromise formation.
