Dear Professor,
I have just heard that Groddek has died after a ten days' illness with heart disease.1 Please accept my condolence for I know you specially esteemed him. The only consolation is that he did not die in Ferenczi's lifetime.
On the other hand, I have the pleasant domestic news that my boy aged twelve has just won a scholarship of £500 at a modern public school (not co-educational) in Derbyshire. He will be going there in September, the first step into the outer world.2
We have seen Ernst and Lucie several times lately, she seems to me to be better, but older. Naturally she cannot feel settled till Ernst gets some good work here. I daresay his prospects are satisfactory when he gets a chance, but it is very hard to make the first start.
It is good to hear how much you are enjoying this lovely weather in your pleasant surroundings, which must make a wonderful change from the Berggasse; I shall see you now in a couple of months time and am greatly looking forward to it.
Yours always affectionately
Ernest Jones.
