Action as a Vehicle for Learning: The ‘Learning from Doing Workshop’1

Fellow of the British Psychoanalytical Society and a Fellow of the Royal College of Psychiatrists. He is currently Professor in the Centre for Psychoanalytic Studies, University of Essex. He has been interested in many aspects of the social life of psychiatric institutions and the way that psychoanalytic ideas might help in understanding and improving the work of mental healthcare. He founded the journal, Therapeutic Communities, for the Association of Therapeutic Communities in 1980. He has written and researched on many psychoanalytic topics.

Died unexpectedly on 3rd July 2009. Enrico trained as a physician and then in medical psychology at the University of Bologna. He had individual analytical training and in group therapy. He was a Professor at the University of Milan. Inspired by the work of Tom Main and Franco Basaglia, he worked in both public and private psychiatric institutions, focusing particularly on psychosis and personality disorder. In 1998, he took the lead in organising the successful ‘Myth and Reality’ Conference in Milan, published as the book La Comunità Terapeutica tra Mito e Realtà (co-edited with A. Ferruta, G. Forest and M. Vigorelli. From this, in the same year, he founded with colleagues the Associazione Italiana per l'approccio di Comunità Terapeutica (AiTC), the Italian Association of Therapeutic Communities, and was president for some years and has organised many training events. Together with Professor R. D. Hinshelwood, he organised a number of experiential workshops for TC practitioners (described in this paper). He also organised a number of conferences with Dr Marcel Sassolas, director of the Communautes di Villeurbanne and the Association Santé Mental in France. He represented Italy on the Editorial board of the journal Therapeutic Communities; and in 2008, with J. Gale and A. Realpe, he edited a volume in the ISPS series published by Routledge, entitled Therapeutic Communities for Psychosis.
