Beyond Sacred: Voices of Muslim Identity is an interview-based theater production, created by Ping Chong and Company in 2015, which illuminated the real-life experiences of five Muslim Americans who came of age in a post-9/11 society. The script is based on interviews with the participants who then share their own true stories in the final production. The goal of Beyond Sacred was to use theater and storytelling to serve as a platform to enable Muslim and non-Muslim communities across the country to deeply engage with Muslim experience and identity, explore cross-cultural dialogue, and build community connections across difference. After the premiere production, Beyond Sacred toured to 11 states and was seen by over 10,000 people. This article is an edited conversation between co-writer/co-director Sara Zatz (Associate Director of Ping Chong and Company) and the original cast members: Tiffany Hosein, Ferdous Dehqan, Kadin Herring, Amir Khafagy, and Maha Syed. In this conversation, the participants reflect on the creation of Beyond Sacred and the impact it had on their lives and sense of self.
